John Masefield (1878-1967) born at Led bury in Hertfordshire became Poet Laureate in 1930. He received the Order of Merit in 1934. A born story-teller, Masefield also did much to restore realism to contemporary English poetry. In both narrative and lyrical poems his vitality and simple style have a definite appeal.
