Teachers: Building Future Amid Crisis

This global Covid-19 pandemic brought forth us the vital roles that teachers play in building and shaping the future of the nation. Teachers became even more important as they navigate how to help students adjust to distance learning and adapt to Covid-19 safety guidelines in and out of their classrooms. They became busy, a different kind of busy with no gaps and no breaks; working as hard as they possibly can to make the best out of this tough situation. The pandemic significantly added to the challenges faced by teachers. It will be no exaggeration to say that they not only accepted the challenge but proved themselves in building the future of the students, of the nation, of the world and also of the teaching profession.

Therefore, 5th September Teachers’ Day provide the occasion to celebrate the teaching profession and give due respect to the effort and hardwork of teachers who by unfolding the landscape of online education narrowed the learning gap leaving not a single child behind.

We all know that Teachers’ Day is celebrated every year on the birth anniversary of our second President Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, but very few know the reason behind. When he took the charge as President of India in 1962, his students, as he belonged to a teaching profession were eager to celebrate his birthday as ‘Radhakrishnan Day’. The idea was declined by him making suggestion to celebrate the day as Teachers’ Day. He considered teachers as the best minds in the country and giving due regard to them would be a proud privilege. Ever since then, 5th September is observed as Teachers’ Day throughout the country.

Everyone knows that children are the future of nation. The person who leaves impact most in the children is the teacher as they educate the young minds in the most impressionable years. That is, they have the significant role and everyone realized this importance amid this global pandemic. It is very hard to say where the impact stops as a student is incomplete without his/her teacher. Vice-versa is also applicable. As such, a positive and a pious relationship should be accomplished between teacher and student.

Earlier teaching was a combination of information dispensing custodial child care and sorting out academically inclined students from others. However, at the present times prompted by massive revolutions in knowledge and owing to Covid-19 pandemic, the teachers are restructuring and reinventing themselves and their occupation to better serve the students. Hence, assessing and witnessing their hardwork and dedication our Indian culture has given place to teacher higher than that of God.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank all my teachers and mentors on this special day for whatever I am today I owe to them. And I am also grateful to my students as they make me complete. Happy Teachers’ Day to all!!!
