The Cocktail Party as Revival of Poetic Drama
The Cocktail Party is
one of the most successful poetic plays of T.S.Eliot, The reason is that the
Christian theme and spiritual message are carefully mingled with many other
factors that impress the audience. The contemporary London society, the drawing
room atmosphere, familiar characters surprise; and above all the human tone and
the use of verse pattern resembling ordinary speech, accent for the popularity
of the play.
Besides the major theme
of martyrdom, there are other subsidiary themes seen in the play. It is
remarked,
Christian martyrdom
is the obvious theme in Murder in Cathedral and implied theme in The Family
Reunion. Eliot has introduced his favourite theme of Christian martyrdom, which
has relevance to the contemporary world, in The Cocktail Party also.
Primarily, the play
deals with the different levels of spiritual experience; of the saint and of
ordinary life. The saint in the play is a modern girl born and brought up in a
good modern family. The martyrdom of Celia takes place against the backdrop of
the ordinary life of Chamberlaynes. Edward and Lavinia Chamberlaynes have been
leading a life of incompatibility and discord. Lavinia runs away from the house
on the eve of Cocktail Party to solve the discord by means of a desperate
measure. After being deserted by Lavinia, Edward realises he could not love
Celia, whom he thought he loved. When Celia sees her relationship with Edward
in a true light, she reels under the great blow. Celia’s sense of having failed
in her search for something great and important is devastated. The resulting
mental agitation compels Celia to see a psychiatrist who shows her two distinct
paths- first is the familiar world and second being that of sainthood.
The theme of the play
is more than martyrdom. The play depicts two ways of life chosen by characters that
are differently endowed with spiritual qualities. Hence, the question of choice
assumes great significance in the play. Celia has to make a significant choice.
She is suffering from a strange sense of guilt and chooses the other way, the way
of saint. Eliot makes it clear that neither of the two ways is better. Each is
good in its own way at the level on which it is made. Celia chooses the other
way, and her choice is important because it indicates a higher spiritual level.
It has the power to influence the lives of others. Celia joins a nursing
sisterhood, takes active part in it and finally meets a horrible death
achieving martyrdom.
Therefore, the impact
of Celia’s martyrdom brings about spiritual regeneration and so makes the other
characters more capable of adjustment with each other with common life and
natural order of things. Each of the character has been trying to work out his
own salvation; each is confronted with a choice and is helped and sustained by
the self-sacrifice of Celia.
