Diversification Of Indian English Literature

Indo-Anglian      Indo-English      Anglo-Indian
The colonial encounter beginning in the early nineteenth century is an important factor in the formation of Indian English Literature, an encounter of conflict as well as of awareness. However, it also grew out of an Indian ethos and is responsive to the changing conceptions of Indian nationalism and self-interest. The plurality of Indian English Literature is the result of the clash of the local and the global. With the introduction of English in India, there was a spurt of translations from Indian Classics to English. Besides, there was a creative effort taken by indigenous people. Prior to these, non-Indian writers also contributed by writing about India in the English language. As such, Indian English Literature is diversified into three forms- Anglo-Indian Literature, Indo-English Literature and Indo-Anglian Literature
Literature is a word very common in use.  It handles the symbolic medium of language and is not only the most elusive of the arts, but also the most inclusive.  It is a collection of books; those of poems, novels, short stories and dramas.  A concern with man’s inner life, his passions, his feelings, his thoughts is the distinguishing character of literature.  However, in literature, we look especially, not for the fact or science or logic, but for human emotions and feelings, the play of imagination, the discipline of thought as revealed in the beauty of form.
Indian English Literature refers to the body of work by writers in India who write in English language and whose native or co-native language could be one of the numerous languages of the country.  In the Indian sub-continent, there is a rich literary tradition of going back to the Rig Veda, which was composed probably four thousand years ago.  As the centuries passed, the old tradition weakened and with the coming of west, a study of new species of literature and new forms of social and political organization bloomed.  The native Indian tradition met the imported English tradition and out of this cross fertilization Indian English literature was formed.  Coming to the origin of Indian English Literature the remarks of M.K. Naik are quite appropriate.   He says,
Indian English Literature began as an interesting bi-product of an eventful encounter in the 18th century between a vigorous and enterprising Britain and a stagnant and chaotic India” .
The literary nomenclature of Indian creative writing in English has various shades.  The phrase Indian Literature, on the analogy of American Literature or Australian Literature is not suitable here, for in America and in Australia, English is the only language or the only medium of exchange of words among the people. In India, the Indian Literature would mean, any literature in any Indian Language, as it is a multilingual country.  So, various names are referred to this body of literature. In Indian English Literature, the following names are given with different interpretations.
Ø  Anglo-Indian Literature
Ø  Indo-English Literature
Ø  Indo-Anglian Literature
