Differentiate Schooling from Education

 Education vs Learning

Education vs Indoctrination

Equality and Equity in Education

Economic influence on Equality of Educational Opportunity

In the present day we all know that school is treated as the most reliable, active and formal agency of education. Etymologically, the word school is derived from the Greek word ‘Skhole’ which means leisure. In ancient Greek, leisure places were used for self-development. Gradually these places came to be known as schools where teachers under a pre-planned system give specific knowledge during a fixed time. According to John Dewey,

School is a specific environment, where a certain quality of life and certain type of activities and occupations are provided with the object of securing the child’s development along desirable lines.

Since, school works with pre-planned aims and objectives which ensure harmonious development of child; schooling refers to the more organized form of education that takes place in schools. Schooling is only a subset of education. It is learning where children are given fixed and planned knowledge like-various formulas of mathematics, tense, voice, clause of English Grammar etc. There is also the testing of the knowledge acquired by children via exams. On the other hand, education is not spewing facts and doing anything to pass an exam. It is about inspiring the mind. Education is a wider concept that includes formal, informal and non-formal means of gaining knowledge; whereas schooling is only formal education, but its impact on life of individual is immense.

By a study, it is found that Japanese formal education in schools hugely contributed to their ultimate economic and intellectual performance. However, we find persons making tremendous progress in their field’s inspite of zero contribution of schooling in their life. Kalidas, Surdas, Rabindranath Tagore, James Stuart Mill and many more did not attend any school, still they are eminent scholars. They received informal education.

Therefore, schooling stands for the formal education system that takes place in schools; whereas, education includes a number of different sources of knowledge.
