Education vs Indoctrination

Education vs Learning                            Postcolonialism

Differentiate Schooling from Education

Equality and Equity in Education

Discipline as a Source of Knowledge

The difference between Education and Indoctrination is startling. To find it go through the following lines:-

  • Indoctrination is a well thought out strategy to influence the thinking of others. It is a process to encourage the embracing of another’s beliefs by developing blind and complete agreement with those beliefs. It has an agenda. Education is development of one’s own beliefs based on facts that are discovered throughout the process. It is unbiased.
  •  Indoctrination aims at influencing people to believe in facts. Education involves the seeking of facts and learning about truth. That is, education is process- driven approach and indoctrination is result-driven approach.
  •  Indoctrination poses the belief that there is only one solution to the problem. Whereas, education points out that there are different solutions to the same problem. For this, it uses statistical analysis to encourage thought towards reasoning for finding solution. Indoctrination often uses statistics but that is only to misrepresent data to support the belief.
  • Education opens the mind i.e. it opens doors of intellectual exploration. On the other hand, indoctrination closes the mind. It instils in people to see only that information which is interpreted to promote a particular ideology.                                                                                                        We find indoctrination in every field from philosophical to educational, religious to political etc. Considering an example from history- in Nazi Germany, the solution to growing economic problems was to exterminate all minorities and Jewish citizens. This was indoctrination because it was interpreted that it was the only solution. There was no room for any kind of secondary thought. If we take another example-similar kind we find in the present day North Korea.

However, indoctrination can occur and often does occur with great frequency in many fields.
