Though both the terms Education and Learning sounds synonymous, they stand different from each other. An analysis will help to understand both.

EDUCATION:

Education is a process through which human beings receives or gives knowledge, skills and values from one generation to another in a society. Its objective being- a continuous, progressive and social process by which the innate and incipient powers of a human being are developed which enables a man to adjust himself to the external life. Taking etymological meaning, we find ‘EDUCATION’ has been derived from Latin words ‘Educare’ and ‘Educere’ which means ‘to bring out’ and ‘to draw out’. Thus, Education is used to bring out or to develop the internal potential. However, it is neither limited to a classroom nor limited to a specific period of life. Directly or indirectly we receive education throughout life depending on the different forms- formal, informal and non-formal.

Therefore, Education is that purposeful social process which runs from birth to death continuously and by which a person’s behaviour is modified through optimum all round development of all his innate powers. As such, he may be able to lead his life happily and be an able, useful and dutiful citizen of the society. Hence, it can be said education is a process of growth and development. In the words of Gandhiji,

By education, I mean the all round drawing out of the best in child and man-body, mind and soul.

LEARNING:

Learning is the natural ability of human mind to observe, acquire, process and adjust. This occurs continuously, consciously or unconsciously through education, training, experience, study etc. Learning brings about changes in the way we act, think and feel about ourselves, other people and the whole world. One must learn in order to be educated. This does not mean that educated persons do not learn or on the other hand illiterates do not learn. We learn throughout our life.

Various psychologists like Skinner, Pavlov, and Thorndike etc have proved by experiments that we learn by experience and practice. Every time we learn a new thing there is modification of behaviour. Taking an example- Mr. Prasad, a professor retires from a dignified University. He is well education and knowledgeable person. After retirement he buys a Smartphone. In order to be connected to his known circle he learns to do video calls, chat and also to browse any information. This he does by making mistakes and practice. That is he learns. He learns how to operate new technology. As such, he feels more confident now.

Taking another example- When a three year old child who has never been to school is taken to a garden; we find the child runs to pluck flowers. He easily plucks the dahlias but when he tries to pluck rose, he is hurt by the thorns. Thereby, he becomes cautious to stay away from rose flowers. That is the child learns to not to pluck those flowers by his experience. And hereafter, he becomes cautious while plucking flowers from the garden.

Therefore, learning is something which happens from our experiences and practice. Every experience is a learning experience, but all learning is not education.
