Concept of Equality and Equity in Education

Education vs Learning                         Discipline as a Source of Knowledge

Education vs Indoctrination

Economic influence on Equality of Educational Opportunity

In simple words, concept of Equality is value; whereas, Equity refers to the strategies adopted to realize the value of equality.

Taking the dictionary definition, “Equality is the state or quality of being equal; correspondence in quantity, degree, value, rank or ability.

And, “Equity is the quality of being fair or impartial.”

Now, relating this to education, we find-

Equality is when all children are treated in the same way without giving any importance to their need and requirements. No one is discriminated on the basis of race, caste, sex, disability, religion etc. All students are given the same resources.

In an equitable system, resources are given to the students based on their individual needs. For eg: In a particular class, test is taken and result is also declared where students achieve different grades. After this, normal classes are arranged for all students irrespective of their grades; hence this is equality. Whereas, if extra classes are arranged for weak students where different methods are used to explain the concept so that they can understand and have equal access to success, then this is equity.

To make it more clear,

Equality in education means the state where all children are at the same level. Equity means treating each and every child fairly that is justifying them. For eg: When a teacher explains a particular topic in the class; it is equality. During the process of teaching some students grasp the topic and fail in understanding the same. So, the teacher again explains the topic to those students who didn’t get. This time the teacher adopts different methods keeping in mind the individual differences. As a result, everyone understands the topic. This is equity in education.

Equality indicates uniformity; whereas, equity indicates each according to needs. For eg: In an equal learning environment, all students will be given the resources they need such as books, uniform, shoes etc without any concern to the size. In an equitable learning environment, the distribution will be done keeping in mind the right size of uniform and the right pair of shoes for every student. So that they all can access the resource and stand as equal.

Therefore, equity cannot be achieved by treating all students equally but equality can be achieved by treating all students in an equitable manner.
