Economic Influence on Equality of Educational Opportunity

Equity and Equality in Education                    Different forms of Academic Discipline

Education vs Indoctrination

Chief features of Metaphysical Poetry

Education directly refers to improving the economic and social status in society; therefore equality of educational opportunity means to give equal chance to every individual to get educated for the development of his capacity. Infact the Constitution of India has made provisions for equal educational opportunity to all people of the country.

In other words, equality of educational opportunity means the provision of incentives to school children with special facilities and provisions in higher education so as to compensate for the social and economic handicaps faced by disadvantaged sections of society. However, the economic system of India influences the equality of educational opportunity. We all know that India is a developing country as such half of its population lies below poverty line which has to elevate. The factors lying behind are:-

1)     All members of economically backward families get engaged in earning. Even the small children are not spared. Though we find that a small child relatively do very little work and earns meagrely; however, his tiny income counts much for them. We find the time spent by the child in his work is relatively less and flexible to be able to get adjusted along with school hours. But, the mental set-up of family has become as such that they are inclined towards the instant income. Thus, the family feels reluctant to send the child to school.

2)    Secondly, household work and other responsibilities also influence equality of educational opportunity. It is seen that the eldest child of a poor family is assigned the household works and also to look after the younger siblings when the parents are away for work. They cannot think of sparing the child for education.

3)    Though the government for fulfilling this criteria charges only nominal fees and also provides resources necessary for education, still the economic conditions of the family do not allow them to spend on fees and other stationary objects. They think this as an expensive activity. Also, the time taken to get the returns from education is much more;   therefore the poor families worry for their survival and are not ready to spare their helping hands.

4)   Similar kind of situation is found in adult education category. They are so occupied with their work and earning for survival of their family that they hardly feel any inclination towards education. Also, if they are inclined, they hardly have any time to spare.

5)   The deprivations of adequate infrastructure in school do not attract the kids to spend their time there. To conclude, the economic factors of the country also affect the education. Vocational education demands expenditure of more resources which the government is unable to meet. The resources currently allocated do not seem to be adequate to vocationalise in such a way that those who complete it are not well competitive in work. Unless the country is in position to raise Gross National Product the plan and programmes for equal opportunities in education cannot be successfully implemented.
